The technology layer, in other words, is sophisticated.

security leaders are now being asked to demonstrate alignment with business objectives and deliver measurable performance data across their programmes. A shift from “fewer incidents” as the success metric to “safer, smoother, more accountable operations.”

Insurance carriers, legal counsel, and institutional investors are all moving in the same direction. Security operations need to be evidenced, not just executed.

The global AI video surveillance market is projected to reach $9.7 billion by 2026. The perimeter is getting smarter.

The operational core, less so.

Drone patrol logs are, by their nature, automatically generated and timestamped.

GPS-verified robotic patrols produce structured data as a byproduct of operating.

But the human patrol, which remains the primary security presence in most commercial properties, generates whatever record the guard writes down, in whatever format they choose, assuming they write anything at all.

The operational audit trail is quietly becoming a financial asset.

On the liability side, the exposure is more direct.

A property owner who cannot produce timestamped evidence of patrol activity at the time of an incident, cannot show that access control procedures were followed, cannot evidence that a documented response occurred, is not simply in an awkward position.

They are in a materially weaker legal position than a property owner whose operation generates clean, searchable records as a matter of routine.

The gap between those two positions is not, in most cases, a technology gap. The platforms that generate GPS-verified patrols, structured incident reports, and auditable access control records exist and are commercially available. The gap is a procurement and management gap:

security is still being bought primarily on headcount and response time SLAs, rather than on the quality of the operational record it produces.

But:

• how is patrol activity verified?
• What does an incident report actually look like?
• Is it structured and searchable, or narrative and unretievable?
• What audit trail does this operation generate, and in what format does it reach the property management team?
• Could you demonstrate operational compliance with your duty of care obligations if asked to do so tomorrow?

These are not unreasonable questions.

They are the questions that an increasingly litigation-aware, insurance-scrutinising market is beginning to formalise, and that the most forward-looking security directors have been asking for years.

The $50 billion figure that opens this conversation is, in one sense, a headline.

In another, it is a diagnostic.

Losses at that scale, across a sector that invests heavily in security technology, point to something structural:

not a shortage of cameras, not a shortage of officers, but a shortage of the one thing that connects them into a system capable of learning, improving, and proving itself.

Memory. Structured, retrievable, auditable memory of what happened, when, and who responded.

The most effective commercial property security operations in 2026 are not defined by their headcount or their hardware specification.

They are defined by information quality.

And in an environment where the question is increasingly not “were you protected?” but “can you prove you were protected?”, information quality is the only thing that matters once the incident has already occurred.
