It doesn’t get bored at 3am.

By almost every observational metric, it outperforms a human being.

So why, when something actually goes wrong, do so many UK commercial property operators find themselves staring at a gap between what the technology detected and what anyone can prove happened next?

The honest answer isn’t flattering to either side of the man-versus-machine debate. It is that the debate itself has been asking the wrong question.

The SIA’s Megatrends Report 2026 finds that over 90% of security solution developers are focused on AI features in R&D; a figure that reflects genuine momentum, not marketing.

AI-powered video analytics platforms can reliably detect zone breaches, licence plate anomalies, crowd density shifts, and perimeter intrusions. They have, at commercial scale, finally delivered on a decade of promises.

The global AI video surveillance market, which stood at $4.1 billion in 2020, is projected to reach $9.7 billion by 2026, according to DSP’s 2026 analysis. Drone-first response programmes are standard on larger UK campuses. Quadruped robots are entering commercial deployment. Cloud-based access control now manages multi-site portfolios from a single interface.

This is not incremental progress. It is a structural transformation in observational capacity.

And yet…

Security Magazine’s 2025 Benchmark Report found that many of the physical security operations feeding centralised security centres still rely on handwritten patrol logs, verbal incident briefings, and paper-based reporting systems designed before the smartphone era.

The technology layer is sophisticated.

The operational layer underneath it, in many cases, is not. But, this is the gap that security operations software can fill.

The DSP 2026 analysis makes an observation that deserves more attention than it typically receives: commercial insurers are developing more granular recognition of active security technology in their underwriting frameworks.

Properties with documented active monitoring; verified patrol logs, drone patrol records, structured incident reporting, are beginning to receive meaningful premium recognition. The operational record is becoming a financial asset.

For commercial property managers, the practical question is not whether their security provider has AI cameras.

Most do.

It is whether the response that follows an AI alert generates evidence.

• What does a patrol log actually contain?

• Is incident reporting structured and searchable, or narrative and siloed?

• What audit trail does the operation produce and in what format does it reach the property management team?

A well-deployed team of officers and physical security, whose patrols are GPS-verified, whose reports are structured, and whose access control decisions generate a retrievable record, provides dramatically more operational and evidential value than a larger, better-equipped team whose activity disappears into a paper notebook.

The technology doesn’t replace the judgment. It gives the judgment a memory.
